At what temperature should you wear a diving surfing wet suit?

If we are talking only about water temperature then you should start wearing a shorty diving surfing wet suit when the water temperature is around 72F/22C. When it drops below 68F/20C you better get a full 3/2 diving surfing wet suit and so on. But this also depends on other factors, not just water temeprature. Things like air temperature, weather and wind can affect your feeling of cold and you need to put on a diving surfing wet suit sooner. Check our ful explanation of all things that influence your diving surfing wet suit thickness choice.

Keep in mind these are very approximate and mainly based on my personal experience.

Below 60 degrees F: Having a diving surfing wet suit at this temperature really isn't optional. Additionally, I strongly recommend a long sleeve diving surfing wet suit. Use two swim caps for warmth if possible.

60-65 degrees F:Having a diving surfing wet suit is strongly recommend, and having a long sleeve diving surfing wet suit is highly preferable. You might be able to get away with not using a diving surfing wet suit at these temperatures (especially if it is short swim and you are a fast swimmer), but you might not be able to as well.

65-70 degrees F: Having a diving surfing wet suit would be preferable, but not absolutely needed in most cases. Either a long sleeved or sleeveless diving surfing wet suit would probably work okay, although a long sleeved might be nice.
